Mike Dean admits he's dodgy...
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/aug/25/mike-dean-admits-avoiding-var-call-to-spare-referee-more-grief-last-season

"Mike Dean has admitted he failed to correct a mistake in a Chelsea v Tottenham match last season to prevent his friend Anthony Taylor receiving extra “grief”."

Surely, they can't continue having the same group of refs operate VAR as they ones they put on the pitch?

Wouldn't it make complete sense to have 2 independent groups, one to oversee the other without any bias etc.

For a competition with clubs in it worth billions why do they allow for so much bullshit? The VAR technology is undermined by the people operating it basically. Refs mates calling decisions for them,... it's madness.

For anyone thinking that dodgy VAR decisions favouring certain sides is just a Premier league problem, have a look at Celta Vigo’s disallowed goal in the first couple of minutes against Real Madrid last night.

Sky should kick him off straight away. He cannot offer an objective view on any decision. Was, is, and always will be a cunt. Anthony Taylor should get a ban for being useless and involved. If Tony can get banned for betting and Paqueta investigated for betting, actions which might affect a games outcome how is this different as it actually did affect a games outcome?

“The net is closing”

You fucking retard.
You think if Mike Dean is betting on the result of matches he’d go on a podcast and announce it to the world?

Not anyone with basic logical faculties who follows the PL. The net is closing and they know it.

People criticise VAR but it seems to me that there is very little wrong with the technology. It seems to work OK with cricket and rugby and it was by no means as bad as the EFL version during the world cup. The problem is that incompetent referees are backing up incompetent referees. The only other explanation could be corruption or a bias deal to keep the rich teams at the top of the league.

Does anyone really believe he deliberately sought to alter the outcome of a professional football match, ‘because his mate’?

Is this what happened in the wolves v man u game the other week? Dickheads confession must raise suspicion across the whole division.

I always wondered how a 60 minute game managed to last 3 hours.........stoppages, you say? That's a lot of injuries......two hours worth, and with all that padding too.

Re: Mike Dean admits he's dodgy...
IMO VAR has made corruption/favouritism easier not harder.

We still have 'incorrect, big decisions'; favouring the big/preferred sides, but the bits of luck that went the way of the small teams are now readily overturned by a zealous operative.

Plus the inherent ambiguity to the rules of football mean that there is now more time to make a considered swayed decision, rather than the challenge of having to do it in the spur of the moment, and the limitations of camera frames mean the 'right frame' on something like an offside can always be selected if needed.

Is this all happening.... maybe, maybe not, but IMO it's certainly made it easier.

The consistency of bad decision making despite the availability of technology and a second look can not be put down to incompetence...its a lazy excuse. It can only be either ambiguity of direction, inability to interpret 'grey' rules consistently, or something more nefarious.

What makes me laugh is that Dean says he did this to spare his mate from extra grief for making a mistake. And now he goes and dobs his mate in it by spilling the beans.

Re: Mike Dean admits he's dodgy...
All VAR has done is shift the onus from one subjective imperfect judge to another by means of an appeals process. The sport gains no benefit and has exacerbated issues like simulation, play acting, and the way the referee calls the game. The biggest example being that offside offences are not called until the end of a play or sometimes not at all to allow VAR to correct any mistake. It has lengthened the average game and robbed fans of the joy and celebration of a spontaneous goal.

It has ruined american football for me to the point I don't bother with watching it live any more so I can skip all the stoppages.
